What is a hip area to live in Austin, Texas?

I'm thinking about moving from Dallas to Austin, and want to research home rental costs. What areas are cool, like for arts and music, within walking distance? I would be sharing a house with two other girls, all of us are in our twenties and live for independent music.

Thanks for any advice you may have! What is a hip area to live in Austin, Texas?
South Austin is most eclectic and authentic

North/West Austin are suburban/family oriented

Central/Downtown/UT is full of young professionals with new condos going up all the time

East is not bad, though I would be cautious about neighborhoods east of I-35 between Cezar Chavez %26amp; the capital - just behind in development and generally the residents here have lower incomes than the city average

I would live in south Austin if a job brought me closer to that part of town (up north now) - used to live near I-35 %26amp; Woodward and it was very convenient

(use an apartment locator- they are knowledgable of the area)

Austin is fairly safe though and is certainly a better place to live in your twenties than Dallas (though I am a die-hard Mavs fan)

Also, being music fans, Austin is a town for local talent- some of my favs...Vallejo, Abra Moore and Tungsten Coil, whom I work with (www.tungstencoil.com)

good luck!
You sound like a SoCo gal (look for a place in Zilker or Bouldin).

Depends on your budget. Get on the net and research by zip code and areas. Austin is the alive with so much music. Do not go to East or Southeast Austin..please....Very bad and so much crime. I grew up there and still own property there. I would not live there for a minute. Also Northeast Austin is bad. Anywhere near downtown on the East side of 35 is bad. Trust me. Downtown or So. Congress avenue is hip.....Yuppies, etc. Also very expensive. Do your homework. It will pay off. Good Luck.
Just 5 miles outside of Austin, a city called Lampasses is beautiful. It is surrounded by the hills and a lake is in the middle of it. I like that area.

You can call the City of Commerce and get a more accurate description of an area suitable for you and your income or they will send you maps and a realtor's name. Maybe the Visitor's Bureau can give more information about the night life and hot spots. What is a hip area to live in Austin, Texas?
south congress area, travis heights, downtown, clarksville. Also, the east side is fine - it's actually very funky and artsy. You wouldn't want to go too far east, but the parts close to downtown are great and getting better.
Downtown is the best place to live in Austin, but even the crappiest apartments are expensive liek woah.
It's all still just Texas.
